PATHWAYS
PATHWAYS is an aftercare program of the Accelerated Recovery Program. It aims as a prevention method that allows for caregivers to develop the skills necessary to help buffer symptoms of CF as well as work as a preventative measure against developing CF. There are five areas that research suggests a healthy development can lead to minimalized stress and a healthier life.
- Resiliency Skills
- Self-management and Self-care
- Connection with Others
- Skills Acquisition
- Conflict Resolution
Resiliency SkillsCaregivers that develop a "non-anxious presence" and "self-validated caregiving" are least likely to develop CF (Figley, 2008).
|
Self-Management and Self-CareCaregivers need to maintain a balance between their personal and professional lives, and they need to make sure they aren't overextended in either area (Figley, 2008).
|
Connection with OthersSocial support is vital to the healing process of any disorder. Caregivers recovering from CF are encouraged to reach out and develop a "therapeutic community" so that they have the social support necessary to facilitate the healing process (Figley, 2008).
|
Skills AcquisitionAnother tool to buffer the effects of CF is making sure that the caregiver feels confident in their profession. Without this confidence caregivers can feel deficient and this leaves caregivers vulnerable to CF (Figley, 2008).
|
Conflict ResolutionBeing a caregiver can be draining. Many caregivers know exactly what symptoms they are experiencing, but are unable to slow down and resolve the issues by implementing these strategies. Caregivers must take time to slow down and think about the internal conflicts they are caught in and implement the correct strategies to reduce the stress (Figley, 2008).
